The Prehistoric Diet

Have you ever thought about eating like you are living in a cave? That is the premise of a new diet from the ever-active Dr. Oz. He believes that the cave man got it right when selecting a diet. We should all eat like prehistoric man and leave our modern health issues behind.

The good doctor believes that our modern diet of saturated fat, processed sugar, artificial ingredients and factory-made meals has led to the chronic diseases of high cholesterol, high blood pressure and type II diabetes. By returning to the diet of our distant ancestors we can reverse this damage and lead healthier lives.

The Dr. Oz Prehistoric Diet tracks food in 4 categories:

Category 1: Proteins. This should be no more than 10% of total daily calories. Your typical modern city dweller gets 60% of their calories from proteins. No animals are harmed in this diet, so proteins come from beans and leafy green vegetables.

Category 2: Calcium. Critical for bone health, this is found in tofu, soy or rice milk, or fortified cow's milk.

Category 3: Fat. What, you never saw a fat zucchini? Vegetable fats are the healthy fats, so load up. Olives and avocados have omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, seeds and nuts are also loaded with omega-3s. These monounsaturated fats are great for your body.

Category 4: Carbohydrates. No a lot of carbs for our cave man. This category is mostly a source of antioxidants and minerals. Look for the brightly colored fruits and veggies. Think strawberries, carrots, bananas, limes, blueberries, beets, oranges and squash.

This kind of high-fiber, low saturated fat diet will leave you lean (and possibly mean) and healthy. Dr. Oz expects that cholesterol , blood pressure and blood glucose will all benefit from a little of this "back to the caves" approach to eating.
