Dr. Caroline Apovian is the director of nutrition and
weight management at the Boston Medical Center. She is also an associate professor
of medicine and pediatrics at the Boston University School of Medicine.
She created the Overnight Diet, and published a book by the same name, based on
her 25 years’ experience helping thousands of obese patients lose weight.
The Overnight Diet is simple. Every week, you eat a high
protein diet for six days. On the seventh day, you drink only smoothies made
from specific ingredients. That’s right; no solid food at all for one day each
week. Every night you get at least eight hours of sleep.
Dr. Apovian believes that lack of sleep causes our bodies
to secrete a “hunger hormone” that makes us overeat and store away excess food
as fat. By ensuring sufficient sleep, your body doesn’t secrete this mysterious
hormone and makes only enough insulin for the high protein diet.

As you might expect, there are some critics. Losing two
pounds overnight draws a lot of skepticism. Two pounds of fat equals about six
thousand calories. That’s a lot of calories to burn counting sheep. More
likely? You are losing water weight, not fat.
Can you lose nine pounds a week on a high protein diet?
Certainly, at least for a while. The Atkins and Paleo diets are two popular
high protein diets that skip the weekly juice cleanse. Neither of those diets
give you any motivation to get to bed early, though.
